Oakville began in 1793, when Dundas Street was surveyed for a military road. In 1805, the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada bought lands between Etobicoke and Hamilton from the Mississaugas. The land not bought was at the mouths of Tlevle Mile Creek, Sixteen Mile Creek and along the Credit River.

In 1807, British immigrants settled the area that surrounded Dundas Street and on the shore of Lake , ntimber shipment, and wheat farming.tario.

In 1962, the town of Oakvile merged with its neighbouring villages, which were Bronte, Palaermo, Sheridan and the remainder of Trafalger Township; it then became the new Town of Oakville, reaching northwards to Steeles Avenue in Milton.
